 
															Verra has introduced VM0051, a new Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology designed to reduce methane emissions in rice farming through improved water and crop management practices. Replacing the outdated Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) AMS-III.AU, VM0051 offers a more advanced approach to sustainability in rice production, ensuring more accurate measurement of emission reductions and promoting farming techniques that optimize water and fertilizer use. This methodology also brings social benefits, such as increasing farmers’ income and enhancing opportunities for women in agriculture.
VM0051 introduces stricter additionality criteria, requiring projects to prove they go beyond standard regulatory requirements. It expands eligibility to include methanotrophic bacteria, low-emission rice varieties, and optimized nitrogen fertilizer use. The methodology also enforces soil protection measures and comprehensive emission tracking for methane, nitrous oxide, and CO₂. Projects must demonstrate a minimum 5% reduction in emissions to qualify for credits. Additionally, VM0051 allows for flexible measurement methods, such as biogeochemical models, direct field measurements, and standard emission factors. This initiative enables high-quality Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) that can be traded, encouraging climate action while making rice farming more sustainable.
