On May 9, 2025, the release of the Future of Fertilizer report—commissioned by Anglo American and compiled by Deloitte—sparked renewed global calls for more sustainable fertilizer practices to meet the world’s food demands by 2050. Based on insights from 74 agricultural and food industry experts, the report stresses that the fertilizer sector must evolve to balance high crop yields with soil health, emissions reduction, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Experts agreed that future success in agriculture will depend on rethinking traditional fertilizer use, developing scalable nutrient solutions, and creating incentives aligned with farmers’ daily realities. The report anticipates that by 2050, policy, innovation, and collaboration across the food value chain will drive a shift from focusing solely on yield toward a model that values nutritional quality, soil regeneration, and emission accountability. The findings are expected to guide discussions at the upcoming International Fertilizer Association (IFA) conference, with growing consensus that fertilizer innovation is key to securing global food and environmental resilience.
