Austria Prepares Overhaul of Renewable Energy Support System to Boost Market Efficiency

Austria is advancing a significant reform of its Renewable Energy Expansion Act (EAG) aimed at improving market integration, competition, and efficiency in the clean energy sector, according to state secretary for energy Elisabeth Zehetner. Speaking at a conference on photovoltaics and energy storage organized by PV Austria and the Technology Platform Photovoltaics (TPPV), Zehetner announced that battery storage systems will gain a larger role in future subsidy schemes, marking a shift toward smarter grid balancing and renewable integration.

The government is also finalizing a new Electricity Industry Act to modernize the power market, ensuring security of supply, fair pricing, and grid efficiency. Industry leaders, however, urged caution: Herbert Paierl, chair of PV Austria, warned that unclear policy signals are already slowing solar growth, while Hubert Fechner of TPPV advised against new grid-related burdens that could harm competitiveness. With 60% of Austria’s energy still fossil-based, Fechner called for an ambitious national electrification strategy to accelerate the transition. The legislative package, expected soon, could redefine Austria’s renewable policy landscape for the coming decade.
