Germany Awards 3.5GW in Onshore Wind Tenders as Renewable Capacity Continues to Grow4

Germany’s Federal Network Agency awarded 3.5GW of onshore wind capacity in its latest tender, following a record level of interest from developers. The tender was heavily oversubscribed, with bids totaling more than 8GW, the highest volume ever recorded for an onshore wind auction. Most of the awarded capacity was allocated to projects in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, highlighting the continued dominance of these regions in Germany’s wind power expansion.

At the same time, the agency reported that Germany’s total installed renewable energy capacity rose by nearly 21GW in 2025, reaching just under 210GW—an 11% year-on-year increase. Growth was driven primarily by solar and wind power, with solar capacity increasing by 16.4GW and onshore wind expanding by 4.6GW, significantly above the previous year’s level. By the end of 2025, Germany had 117GW of installed solar capacity and 68.1GW of onshore wind capacity.

Despite strong progress, officials noted that faster expansion is still needed to meet 2030 targets, particularly for onshore wind, which requires an average annual increase of 9.4GW. Planning approvals for onshore wind reached a high level in 2025, suggesting a strong pipeline for future growth, while offshore wind capacity increased modestly to a total of 9.5GW.
