Amazon Expands Renewable Energy Projects in Spain and Portugal

Amazon has announced the launch of 17 new renewable energy projects in Spain and its first project in Portugal, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. In Spain, the company has now developed a total of 94 solar and wind projects, providing over 3.7 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy, enough to power more than 2.3 million homes annually.

The new projects in Spain include wind farms and solar plants in regions such as Aragón, Andalucía, Castilla y León, Catalonia, and Extremadura, with a combined capacity of over 870 megawatts (MW). One of the most significant additions is a 212 MW solar plant in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), set to be one of Amazon’s largest in the country, with an estimated €200 million investment and the creation of 800 jobs during construction.

In Portugal, Amazon has signed its first energy deal to develop the Tâmega Wind Complex, expected to be the largest wind project in the country. This innovative project will integrate wind and hydropower, using generated energy to pump water into the Tâmega reservoir, which can be released to produce electricity when needed. With a €350 million investment and a capacity of 219 MW, it is projected to create over 700 jobs during construction.

These initiatives are part of Amazon’s The Climate Pledge, aiming to match the electricity used in its operations and data centers with 100% renewable energy while accelerating its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement target.
