FAO Committee on Agriculture seeks to turn agricultural challenges into opportunities

The 29th session of FAO’s Committee on Agriculture (COAG) opened in Rome on 30 September 2024, highlighting the urgent need to transform agrifood systems in the face of growing challenges such as the climate crisis and global hunger. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu noted that while these challenges are immense, they also offer opportunities to improve food systems.

During the week, COAG will discuss key issues such as animal health, sustainable management of plastics in agriculture, the bioeconomy, water and land resources, and gender equality in agri-food systems. The decisions are expected to contribute to FAO’s efforts to make agrifood systems more efficient, inclusive and sustainable, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Among recent achievements, FAO has worked on the sustainable management of plastics in agriculture, the bioeconomy, and gender equality, as well as leading efforts in water management and the fight against transboundary plant and animal diseases.
